Setting AI Ownership & Accountability
In the last article, we moved from visibility to direction: What are we actually trying to achieve with AI?
Unfortunately, after great enthusiasm and energy, here is where many organizations begin to stall.
The main reason is a lack of clear accountability. This is made worse as most teams don’t fully understand or agree what accountability even means.
Where AI Efforts Start to Drift
To summarize, at this stage, most leadership teams have:
A set of promising initiatives
Alignment on where AI could add value
Early momentum
But because ownership is unclear, initiatives remain loosely defined, and responsibility is shared… which often means it belongs to no one.
And what started as focused effort quietly turns back into experimentation – without a clear owner.
The Necessary Shift: From Team Alignment to Individual Accountability
Strong execution requires clear escalation paths to a single accountable owner. As one of our production VP clients once so endearingly requested, “Give me one throat to choke.”
Every prioritized initiative must have a clear executive owner. ONE clear executive owner.
That means each initiative is tied to:
A defined business objective
A measurable KPI impact
A clear success threshold
Realistic milestones and due dates
All under the ownership of just one executive
At this point, AI is no longer a collection of ideas. Instead, it becomes a portfolio of business initiatives, with measurable expectations attached.
When the Conversation Changes Again
Once ownership becomes explicit, something important happens. The vibe changes.
Initiatives are no longer interesting ideas, but concrete projects.
Progress is no longer hoped for, but planned.
Results are no longer aspirational, but expected.
What began as direction has now become commitment.
Why does this matter? With accountability, AI shifts from a strategic bolt-on and becomes part of how the business actually performs.
A Question for Your Team
If you looked at your current AI initiatives: Can you clearly name who owns each one, and what success looks like?
To ask it in a slightly more brash way, “What exactly is each Executive being held on the hook for?”
The answer to that question determines whether AI delivers results…or just remains a feel-good performative exercise.
